Chapter Five
“Napoleon’s?” Heather asked, flopping down onto Melody’s hotel bed.
Can’t we just stay in so I can finish drafting the first-pass letter to Justine? It’d been such a long day with closing speeches from a few guest speakers, and on top of that Karri had requested she finish writing up notes on one of their newest author’s manuscripts so Karri could attend tonight’s ball, and that fluffy bed was looking pretty heavenly right about then.
Melody protested with a quick shake of her head. If she was going out, she didn’t want it to be Napoleon’s. Not anywhere Declan might be. Last night had been a mistake, she realized as she sat through hours and hours of PowerPoints that day. Spending time with Declan at all had. Because what did she have to show for it? Nothing. Well, she knew how to play a few chords, but she was pretty sure that the research on music theory she’d read said she would have to learn how to play an instrument, not press a few notes. Not have hot sex on said instrument, either.
“If we’re going to go out,” Melody said, balling her long hair into a knot on top of her head, “I’d rather get out of this hotel.”
“Dancing?”
Melody screwed up her face. Yeah, no. “Maybe something not so…sweaty. More relaxed. And outdoors. Like a pub or something.”
After spending a few minutes searching on her phone, Heather found the perfect place at the Plaza. “Biergarten,” she said with a giggle. “Sounds like fun.”
Thirty minutes later the two of them hopped out of the taxi and paid the driver. Heather gestured to a neon sign: Club Raw. “You sure you don’t want to shake your ass for a little bit?”
And have strange men rubbing their body parts against her? No, thanks. “I’m sure. Besides, I’ve never been to a beer garden before.”
They entered the gate to the outdoor, courtyard-like area. Spans of grass butted up to a small stage, open stalls selling a variety of food items—kabobs and gourmet fries—scattered between. Vine-covered trellises traversed a large section of grass where a variety of games sat. Bocce ball, Frisbee golf, and—
“Corn hole!” Heather screeched. “I love that game. We so have to play.”
Melody laughed at Heather’s enthusiasm. Maybe a game would get her mind out of the gutter, anyway. Seemed ever since she’d left Declan’s, that lonely feeling had only intensified. “Fine,” she said. “You go set it up, and I’ll get us drinks.”
From the craft beer booth, she bought two double IPAs—yeah, the day needed to be wiped away with an insane amount of alcohol—then trekked through the grass to where Heather was standing with two guys. One short and stocky, the other tall and…
Oh, God. What was he doing here? Wasn’t he supposed to be working?
To think of it, he’d never said so when they’d parted ways earlier that morning. She’d merely assumed he worked every night.
Heather waved her over with a bright smile. “Mel, look who it is. The piano guy!” Then, as if the idea had hit her square in the face, her smile fell and nose scrunched.
